Manipur: Treasure Trove of Biodiversity



Literally meaning "the jewelled land", Manipur is richly endowed with natural beauty and splendour. Home to Sangai (a rare species of brow-antlered deer) and the Siroi Lily (the only terrestrial lily grown on the hill tops of Siroi hill), Ethel St. Clair Grimwood described Manipur as a Pretty place more beautiful than many show places of the world. The first Prime Minister of India, the Late Pandit Jawaharlal Nehru, described Manipur as a Jewel of India, bewitching beholders with its natural beauty and its cultural paraphernalia. An oval shaped valley surrounded by blue green hills, rich in art and tradition has inspired description such as the Switzerland of the East with its cascading rapids, tripling rivers, varieties of flowers, lakes etc. It has been decorated by innumerable beautiful flora and inhabited by a number of attractive fauna, Manipur shines with Nature grace.

The Manipur Biodiversity Board is highly committed for conservation of Biodiversity, its sustainable use and sharing benefit from its commercial utilization with local people.

Manipur Biodiversity Board is established under Section 22 of the Biological Diversity Act 2002.State Rules are notified on 2008.The function of Manipur Biodiversity Board is to i)Conserve Biodiversity of State, ii)Ensure and regulate sustainable use of State's Bio resources. iii)To implement Access and benifit sharing Apart from it the Board advises he State Government on any mater concerning all above maters and regulate by granting approvals for commercial utilization or Bio survey and bio utilization of bio resources by any Indian National.

Moreover It directs the local bodies/Biodiversity Management Committees for effective implementation of the Act and faciliate their measningful participation in all measures relating to Conservation, sustainable use, and equitable benifit-sharing.
